MONTRÉAL (17 janvier 2011) – Les Canadiens de Montréal ainsi que la Fondation Molson ont annoncé aujourd’hui un investissement majeur de 250 000 $ chacun sur cinq ans au sein de la Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence du Québec.

Dans un premier temps, le Club de hockey Canadien a renouvelé son partenariat avec la Fondation en annonçant un montant de 250 000 $ sur cinq ans (de 2010 à 2014) à raison de 50 000 $ par année, afin de permettre la poursuite de leur programme de bourse dédié aux jeunes athlètes parmi les plus prometteurs en hockey féminin et masculin. Par la même occasion, les frères Molson ont annoncé que la Fondation Molson réitérait son appui à la Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence avec une nouvelle contribution de 250 000 $ sur cinq ans pour le programme de bourses universitaires.

En 2008, le Club de hockey Canadien avait annoncé un investissement de 100 000 $ sur trois ans au sein de la Fondation, ce qui avait permis de créer ce programme mis sur pied pour appuyer la relève masculine et féminine en hockey sur glace. Pour sa part, la Fondation Molson est un commanditaire de prestige de la Fondation depuis 2004.

Le directeur général des Canadiens, Pierre Gauthier, a donc remis aujourd’hui des bourses de 1 500 $ à vingt-huit jeunes âgés entre 14 et 17 ans. Huit bourses ont été distribuées à des hockeyeuses membres de l’Équipe du Québec qui aspirent à une sélection au sein de l’Équipe nationale senior et vingt autres bourses ont été remises à des hockeyeurs provenant de la Ligue Midget AAA. La cérémonie de remise de bourses s’est déroulée au Centre Bell avant le match entre les Canadiens et les Flames de Calgary.

« En tant qu’équipe professionnelle, c’est notre devoir de participer au développement du hockey et d’encourager la relève. Les futurs joueurs de hockey professionnel sont les jeunes qui pratiquent leur sport favori aux quatre coins de la province. C’est à nous de leur donner les ressources pour qu’ils réussissent. Je félicite tous les récipiendaires pour leurs réalisations et leur souhaite une belle réussite scolaire ainsi que la meilleure des chances pour le reste de la saison, » a indiqué le directeur-général des Canadiens Pierre Gauthier.

Les récipiendaires 2011 ont été retenus en se démarquant par leur excellence sportive tout en poursuivant des études au niveau secondaire ou collégial. Le Programme de bourses des Canadiens de Montréal est géré par la Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence du Québec en partenariat avec Hockey Québec et la Ligue Midget AAA. Le directeur général de Hockey Québec, monsieur Sylvain B. Lalonde, et le président de la ligue Midget AAA, monsieur Claude Gauthier, se disent très heureux de l’appui des Canadiens de Montréal et du travail de la Fondation au soutien des athlètes en hockey. « Le  programme de bourses des Canadiens de Montréal est un lien naturel avec nos organisations et renforce nos objectifs en matière de développement de la personne, tant au niveau académique que sportif », de renchérir messieurs Lalonde et Gauthier.

The Montreal Canadiens and the Molson Foundation team up to donate $250,000 each to the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence 28 young athletes honoured during 4^th annual Canadiens scholarship presentation

MONTREAL (January 17, 2011) – The Montreal Canadiens and the Molson Foundation announced today the investment of $250,000 each over five years to support the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence.

The Canadiens also announced their renewed partnership with the Foundation, with a donation of $250,000 to the organization, spread out over five years (2010 to 2014), at $50,000 per year. The funds will allow the Fondation to pursue its scholarship program for the province’s most promising young female and male hockey players. By the same occasion, the Molson brothers unveiled their support for the foundation, with a new $250,000 contribution by the Molson Foundation, spread over five years, for the funding of the Foundation’s university scholarships program.

In 2008, the Montreal Canadiens announced a three-year investment totalling $100,000 towards the Fondation – a donation that allowed the organization to create a program to support men and women’s ice hockey. The Molson Foundation has been a prestigious sponsor of the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence since 2004.

Canadiens General Manager Pierre Gauthier today presented twenty-eight $1,500 scholarships to hockey players between 14 and 17 years of age. Eight of the scholarships were given to female hockey players from Quebec’s provincial squad who are seeking to join the Canadian national team, while twenty scholarships were handed out to Midget AAA League players. The awards ceremony was held at the Bell Centre prior to the game between the Canadiens and the visiting Calgary Flames.

“As a professional team, it is our duty to take part in the development of hockey and to support the next generation of players,” said Gauthier. “Tomorrow’s professional hockey players are the young people who play their favourite sport throughout the four corners of this province. It is up to us to provide them with the resources they need to succeed. I would like to congratulate all of the recipients and wish every one of them success in class and all the best for the rest of the season.”

“This double investment and the partnership renewal is a testimonial to the solid leadership and the confidence that the Montreal Canadiens and the Molson brothers have towards our foundation and to Quebec’s young athletes and students,” said Claude Chagnon, president of the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence.

Recipients for 2011 were selected based on their hockey excellence and for having continued their secondary or post-secondary education. The Montreal Canadiens scholarships program is managed by Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence in partnership with Hockey Québec and the Midget AAA League. Hockey Québec general manager Sylvain B. Lalonde and Midget AAA League president Claude Gauthier said they were very pleased with the support of the Montreal Canadiens and the work done by the Fondation to support young hockey players. “The Montreal Canadiens scholarships program is a natural link to our organizations and reinforces our objectives, in terms of personal development of each hockey player, both at the academic and sporting levels,” said Lalonde and Gauthier.
